The flame arresters will function by absorbing heat from flame front traveling at the sub-sonic velocities. It thus drop burning gas or air mixture below auto-ignition temperature. And consequently the flame may not survive for long. The heat is then absorbed through channels that are designed into an element. These channels are chosen and measured as mesg of the gas for some specific requirements and installation. These passages can be regular like the crimped metal ribbon or the wine mesh or the sheet metal plates with the punched holes or the irregular one such random packing.

This flame arresters are used only in gas group and the conditions they have been designed and tested to meet the needs accordingly. This flame arresters should be inspected periodically to especially ensure that there is no block of dirt, or corrosion or insects.
